Selecting generator set parts requires more than matching their appearance or product name. Different brands, equipment models, production years and control systems may use similar-looking parts with different electrical specifications, pin assignments or software versions. Establish the equipment details before checking candidate products.
General Selection Information
Please prepare as much of the following as possible:
- Brands and complete models of the generator set, engine, alternator and control system;
- The original part's brand, part number, revision and a clear nameplate photo;
- Photos of connectors, terminals, mounting holes, dimensions, and the front and back;
- Rated voltage, frequency, power, operating supply, input/output ranges and other key specifications;
- Operating environment, actual load, fault symptoms and the reason for replacement;
- Required quantity, delivery destination and desired lead time.
When information is incomplete, list the outstanding checks first. A part that looks the same is not necessarily a direct replacement.
Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs)
In addition to the part number, check:
- Alternator brand, model, excitation method and rated capacity;
- AVR power supply, sensing voltage, frequency and excitation output range;
- Connector count, terminal assignments, overall dimensions and mounting hole spacing;
- Use of an external potentiometer, droop current transformer or paralleling functions;
- Existing wiring and adjustment settings. Do not infer terminal functions from wire colour.
Before installing a new AVR, rule out short circuits, ground faults, faulty rotating diodes and excitation winding problems to avoid damaging the replacement.
Controllers and Display Modules
Confirm the complete model, hardware and software revisions, supply voltage, sensor types, communication interfaces, terminals and panel cutout dimensions. For CAN, RS485, remote monitoring or paralleling applications, also verify the protocol and system topology.
When an older model is discontinued, a replacement controller may require rewiring, configuration changes or a new wiring harness. Obtain a clear wiring and configuration plan before replacement.
Chargers, Actuators and Sensors
- Battery chargers: check the input supply, battery voltage, rated charging current, alarm contacts and mounting method;
- Electronic actuators: check operating voltage, stroke, force, connection type, control signal and the matching governor;
- Speed, pressure and temperature sensors: check measuring range, output signal, thread, connector and mounting position;
- Relays, switches and solenoid valves: check coil voltage, contact rating, connection dimensions and operating medium.
Confirming Alternative Models
Before using an alternative model, complete four checks:
- Mechanical compatibility: dimensions, mounting holes, shaft diameter, threads and available space;
- Electrical compatibility: voltage, current, frequency, polarity, terminals and signal types;
- Functional compatibility: required protection, communication, paralleling and remote control functions;
- Application compatibility: ambient temperature, protection rating, vibration conditions and regulatory requirements.
If the alternative requires wiring changes, configuration changes or additional accessories, document them before confirming the order. Do not rely on guesswork during installation.
Final Checks Before Ordering
- Model, part number and revision have been checked;
- Key specifications and connections are supported by traceable documents or photos;
- Replacement differences and risks have been confirmed in writing;
- Quantity, packaging, supplied documents, lead time and destination have been agreed;
- Installation, commissioning and safety arrangements are ready;
- \[Pending client input: AVRPART's specific selection support scope and response times\].
Installation and testing involving live circuits, hot surfaces, rotating parts, fuel systems or high-voltage outputs must be performed by appropriately qualified or experienced personnel. If compatibility or safety cannot be confirmed, stop installation and contact the equipment manufacturer or a qualified technician.
